Zimbabwe at high risk of cholera outbreak: official (10 Mar 2015)
Harare, March 9 (Xinhua) -- Zimbabwe is at high risk of a cholera outbreak following several cases that have been reported in the country recently, a cabinet minister said Monday.
...He said Zimbabwe had joined the Africhol consortium within the continent that helps countries to monitor cholera and the initiative had revealed that the outbreak had hit Malawi and Mozambique, which had so far recorded 31 deaths and 2,903 cases of cholera.

In Western countries, the word cholera might sound like something belonging to the past. On the contrary, cholera still affects millions of people every year, with an estimated 120,000 deaths in 2014.
"...The current version of the model reproduces well the dynamics of endemic cholera from Matlab, Bangladesh. We plan to extend the analysis to non-endemic settings in Africa using data provided by the African Cholera Surveillance Network (AFRICHOL). We are also working on evaluating the cost-effectiveness of different vaccination strategies in medium- and high-incidence states in Bangladesh to help planning for widespread cholera vaccination in Bangladesh and other countries."

Cholera confirmed in northern Mozambique (8 Feb 2013)
Johannesburg (IRIN) - In the last 10 days, 22 cases of the waterborne disease cholera have been confirmed by laboratory testing in three areas in and around the northern Mozambique town of Pemba, in Cabo Delgado Province. Leonard Heyerdahl, project manager of Africhol - an initiative of Paris-based NGO Agence de Médecine Préventive that is working in cooperation with the government's National Institute of Health (NIH) - told IRIN that from 30 January, “samples started turning positive [for cholera].”

...The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation supports the Africhol project of Agence de Médecine Préventive that works with Ministries of Health in nine African countries to conduct cholera surveillance. The project includes training to lab technicians and lab supplies to improve cholera surveillance in high-risk areas. Good surveillance not only helps countries understand the burden of disease but also helps plan interventions to combat disease. Africhol surveillance data is helping countries target their treatment and prevention efforts.

Une rencontre qui a marqué la première sortie officielle de la nouvelle ministre de la santé et de la lutte contre le sida, la pharmacienne Raymonde Goudou COFFIE.

Africhol Supports Cholera Preventive Measures in Kenya and Tanzania (30 Aug 2012)
The African Cholera Surveillance Network (Africhol) project team conducted supervision visits in Tanzania from 30th July – 3rd August, 2012. All the participating surveillance sites in Temeke, Mwanza and Magu districts were visited, including Temeke Hospital Cholera Treatment Center, Sekou-Toure Regional Hospital, and Magu District Hospital.The objectives of the visit were to: reconcile the data for all cases reported to date from the health facilities and laboratories.

Le consortium mettra en place un Réseau africain de surveillance du choléra (Africhol) pour renforcer la surveillance épidémiologique et la riposte épidémique dans au moins huit pays du continent...
